Back in the 1980’s I ran away from home. I packed up my three babies, two cats and a ferret named Ladmo, leaving Arizona in a cloud of it’s own dust and headed to sights unseen. Putting 2300 miles between everyone and everything I knew.  I ended up in the city of “Hotlanta” (Atlanta, Georgia), It was a total culture shock, the weather, the buildings, the people, the land. I was bound and determined to stay. Well a lot has happened since then, I found the love of my life, both of my parents passed away, my beautiful babies grew up into adults, I became a grandmother over and over again. I lost my oldest boy in a truck accident, I haven’t been back to Arizona in over ten years. My husband bob and I are going to fly there this week. My youngest sister Barbara got plane tickets for Bob and I, My son Randy and his beautiful wife Kathy will be joining us. I will get to see my sister Cindy,her husband Randy, their son Randy, and my beautiful niece Bonnie, my cousin Roland, my Auntie Patti & Gene. It will be wonderful to see them all and spend some time, share some food, happiness and love. I will let everyone of  you know how wonderful everything was…

There are many factions of Religion, I had an uncomfortable encounter with one about ten years back. This particular Religion believes in the God Jehova, and when they show up at your door step they usually come in pairs. A van load pulled up at the end of the drive which I shared with my neighbor and stopped. One male in his early forties got out of the van on the drivers side, another got out of the passenger side, walked to the back of the van and peered in my direction as this African American walked in my direction. He was dressed nice and wore pure black sunglasses, I was being polite, he talked to me about his religion for a couple of minutes, asked if he could come back with his wife, I said sure, he asked me my name, took off his sunglasses and had some very strange looking eyes, handed me a pamphlet and went on his merry way. In the middle of the night I heard a voice call me by my nickname, then called me by my first name and proceeded to announce over and over again that I was damned to hell, damned to hell….I was wide awake. The following day I contacted a friend that dabbles in white magic and told her what was going on, she said it was Voo-Doo, I was given a post hypnotic suggestion, the curse was in the pamphlet , she told me how to get rid of the spell and it stopped. Now I understand why everyone I knew had always refused to open the door for these people.

Back in the early 1950’s John & Edna Grant lived across the street from the train depot in Des Moines, Iowa as most Rail Road employees did at the time. My Grandpa was a Freight Train Engineer, I used to go for rides in the Engine with my Grandpa. One time, Grandma was waiting for him to get done with his run as she needed to go to the store and do some shopping and she wanted him to keep an eye on me. I was sitting in the living room watching The Three Stooges on TV, after Grandma left, Grandpa scooped me up and put me in the front seat of the pickup truck, standing in the middle of the seat and my arm around Grandpas neck, we drove across the railroad tracks and headed to Grandpas favorite tavern. He carried me in, sat me down on the bar, he got some whiskey as that was his drink of choice and I got a soda, it was kind of dark as most bars & I remember getting tired and going to sleep in a booth, waking up to Grandma fussing out Grandpa, my cousin carrying me out of the Tavern.

For some reason when animals are abandoned, they show up at my house. A  few years back, a man moved out of his home and left behind four big puppies and their igloo dog house. We have a dog house in our yard, one morning my daughter went outside and the puppies were living in the dog house. We watered and fed them, tried to find homes for them, eventually, we ended up taking two of them to the animal shelter. We left with them what food we had left. We try to do our share.

From personal experience, when my husband was disabled and I had to stay home and take care of him, we were put in a  very bad spot financially and having three school age children didn’t help. We had to turn to state agencies for assistance, it was demeaning, but it was a “necessary evil”. We needed food stamps, housing assistance, utility assistance and clothing for the kids. That was when I found out about clothing exchanges. It was a Godsend.  Whenever I have the chance, there are Homeless shelters and Battered Women’s Shelters, And Crisis Nurseries where children are put that are in danger of being harmed and are always in need of clothing. It takes a village to raise a child, it also takes one to clothe them. Look up your local shelter, crisis nursery and donate people, DONATE.
